THE INTERVIEW
Who does Charlene Nash listen to when she wants to zone out?
When I want to zone out, I love to listen to either oldies music from when I was younger, so early 2000's or turn up trap music lol. I love chilling in my room, headphones in, and just vibin’ out.
How did you meet God?
So, I grew up in a Christian home, and my parents always raised me up to love Christ. In my high school days, I was at typical high school kid, kinda lost and whatnot, but in my last year, this youth pastor came to our church, and he was really into music and the arts, and he kinda mentored me into the artistry of Christian music and hip hop, and in just being a Christian in general. So as I was on this musical endeavor, I kinda grew into my faith more. I didn't really have a defining moment, like where God changed me one day, but it's been more like a lifelong process that happened after high school.
Tell me about your creative process?
A typical day for me, in terms of writing, begins in the morning as I read and pray. I'm always asking God to bring lyrics into my mind. I think about what I want to write about or what I feel that day. In my room, I have a notebook and I write down random words and things or whatever I'm feeling in that moment, and kind of conceptually put those into a song. I'll get on my piano or my guitar, and I'll start strumming random chords or playing keys and I'll start mumbling words. Then I'll get to a sentence and ask myself, What am I trying to say here? If I'm not writing from scratch, I'll just listen to an instrumental on the computer and I think about how this instrumental makes me feel. If it gives me a hopeful feeling, okay, then I think what can I write about in my life that's hopeful or what I can write about that will encourage and give someone else hope?
Who or what inspires your unique sound?
Well I grew up on mostly pop and r&b music, so I think that's what inspires my sound the most. but of course now that trap music is out, it has definitely influenced my sound as well! I love mixing genres in one song, kind of that eclectic urban popular music sound I would say sums it up. That's the most timeless type of music in my opinion.
What do you hope others get from your music?
I guess the message of Christ, in the simplest terms. Yeah, I always want to put a message in my songs, and I want that message to be clear. People can argue that music is just music or a love song is just a love song, but me personally, I really want people to hear the message of Christ or the hope of Christ... and that they're not alone. That's one of the big things that I try to make music for, to let people know that they're not alone in their struggles and what they're going through.
What are your musical aspirations?
My musical aspirations, and I know this sounds cliche, but wherever God takes me honestly. There are not too many females in the urban pop realm, so it's hard for me to specifically picture my life, or how I want my career to look like in the future cause I haven't really seen people like me, but I just see myself making good music, and making that fresh urban pop sound with a message that points people towards Christ more known. I just make music that I would honestly listen to.
Name two things that are on your bucket list.
Two things on my bucket list, one, I want to shoot a Korean music video! I love K-pop music video visuals, they're just so futuristic, I would be a dream come true if I got to shoot with a Korean videographer! I don't know if that counts as something on a bucket list but yeah lol And two, go to either Egypt or Dubai! I just think they would be to interesting places to visit and they look beautiful from photos lol.
What came first, the chicken or the egg?
I think the chicken came first! God didn't make Adam as a baby, so I feel like a chicken would be made before an egg no? Lol!
What is your life verse?
I have a lot, but let me see if I can pinpoint a verse. (thumbs through pages). I like Philippians 3:12-14 NLT.
"I don’t mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection. But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me. No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us."
So, I really kind of live my life by this, you know, just forgetting what's behind me, struggling forward, knowing that I'm not perfect--that's a big thing for me.
